Portrait of my grandmother ~age 24. This painting is part of a series of portraits exploring age and ageing.

I used a tiny old passport photo for reference (which did make it hard at times) At the time when the photo was taken, she had already been through war and lost loved ones. I wanted to show that although youth can sometimes be harsh on us, an inner strength can lead us through difficult times. This painting of my mum is part of the series on age and ageing. All these portraits are painted with a sparse palette using blue hues. There's a symbolic meaning behind this, as to me, the colour of life is blue. Also I hope that the palette helps bring all the paintings together.
